What is a Tummy Tuck?
A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure that removes excess fat and skin from the stomach area. It will also strengthen weakened muscles and give the stomach a flatter, firmer appearance. An incision is made in the lower abdominal region and weakened muscles are repaired. Excess fat and skin are also removed. If needed, another higher incision may be made to remove excess fat and skin in the upper portion of the stomach.
Benefits of a Tummy Tuck
A tummy tuck will help the patient to attain a slimmer appearance. Excess weight in the stomach area can be due to weight gain, heredity or previous pregnancies. A protruding stomach can detract from a person's appearance, especially if the rest of the body is in proper proportion. And stomach weight can be very hard to trim off through weight loss and exercise. With a tummy tuck, the excess fat and skin that is removed will bring the stomach down to normal proportions. And the muscles in the stomach region will be repaired to make them stronger.
Tummy Tuck FAQ
What is the Recovery Time of Tummy Tuck?
After a tummy tuck, the stomach will be bandaged and an elastic bandage may be used to support the area until the stomach has healed. A small drainage tube may be provided to drain excess fluid. Swelling and pain is to be expected the first few days to a week after surgery. Pain medication may be prescribed to help alleviate discomfort in those first couple of days. Bruising will also take a few weeks to disappear. Any numbness may take several months to go away.
Do I need Anesthesia for Tummy Tuck?
Three types of anesthesia can be used for a tummy tuck. General anesthesia is used, as is local anesthesia with sedation. Epidural anesthesia may also be used.
Is Tummy Tuck Safe?
A qualified cosmetic surgeon will perform a safe tummy tuck for the patient, though there are always risks involved with surgical procedures, such as possible infection and scarring. The patient should discuss any possible risks and side effects with the surgeon before the procedure.
Do I need to Prepare for Tummy Tuck?
A healthy diet and exercise is important to maintain right up until the time for surgery. Any drug, herbal supplement or vitamin that acts as a blood thinner should not be taken for a specified period of time before surgery. There should be no smoking for at least two weeks before a tummy tuck procedure.
How Long Does Tummy Tuck Last?
With regular exercise, a well-balanced diet, and no future pregnancies, a tummy tuck can last a lifetime.
