IPL Facial
What is IPL Facial?
An IPL facial is a procedure using intense pulsed light to repair skin damage caused from the sun, spider veins, rosacea, or angiomas. The doctor will use an instrument which discharges tiny pulses of light to the skin cells beneath the epidermis without damaging this top layer of skin. The IPL facial involves the use of light energy to heat the damaged cells and shrink troublesome blood vessels, but it requires no surgical cutting. Once cell renewal occurs, skin will be more elastic and youthful in appearance, and brown and red splotches will fade.
Benefits of IPL Facial
Patients with sunspots or pigmentation problems will see the skin darken and flake away after two weeks and will have a more even skin tone. Patients having an IPL facial for rosacea should notice less redness within seven days. Spider veins normally fade or disappear altogether within two weeks of the IPL facial. Angiomas will also fade significantly or disappear entirely within fourteen days of treatment. IPL facials also improve the texture of the skin and cause lines and wrinkles to be less noticeable.
IPL Facial FAQ
What is the Recovery Time of IPL Facial?
A patient may experience some slight stinging during an IPL facial, but most find the application of light to be only slightly uncomfortable. Although the face may be red immediately following an IPL facial, patients can return to work or leisure activities immediately and cosmetics may be reapplied. The redness should fade within a few hours, but some scaling or flaking may continue for a week or longer.
Do I need Anesthesia for IPL Facial?
General anesthesia is not used for IPL facials. Physicians usually apply a topical cooling or numbing gel before beginning treatment, and some may use a fan to keep patients more comfortable.
Is IPL Facial Safe?
An IPL facial carries very few risks because it does not involve ablative techniques nor use the heat of a laser. For these reasons, infection is not a concern during IPL facial procedures. Skin irritation may develop but disappears quickly within the next few days.
Do I need to Prepare for IPL Facial?
No preparation is necessary for an IPL facial although some doctors may ask patients to take acetaminophen before coming for the procedure. Otherwise, goggles will be provided to protect the eyes during the IPL facial which usually takes less than a half hour.
How Long Does IPL Facial Last?
Patients usually have four or more treatments of IPL separated by at least three weeks. Once the desired effect has been achieved, the results from an IPL facial may last as long as twelve months.
